Things to do in Breckenridge with kids

Taking a family trip to Breckenridge with kids? There are so many fun activities for kids of all ages, from cool outdoor activities to indoor options when you want to stay inside.

As a former preschool teacher in Breckenridge, I’ve learned all of the kid-friendly activities that kids love to do in the mountains. This guide covers kid-friendly things to do in Breckenridge, with free and realistic ideas for families in all kinds of weather.

What to know about visiting Breckenridge with kids:

• Altitude can affect kids faster than adults, especially during the first day or two. Take things slow, drink extra water, and plan low-energy activities early in your trip.
• The weather can change quickly, even in summer. Pack layers for everyone, including jackets and hats, since mornings and evenings can feel much cooler.
• Use the free bus system in Breckenridge when possible. It runs throughout town and makes it much easier to get around without dealing with parking.
• Reservations are recommended during peak seasons, especially for winter activities, indoor attractions, and popular experiences.

Free kid-friendly things to do in Breckenridge

Visit the Isak Heartstone Troll (Free)

The Isak Heartstone Troll is a life-size troll made out of recycled materials and tucked away in a forested area in Breckenridge. It’s a super fun and popular activity to do with people and kids of all ages.

The ‘hike’ is pretty short, and it’s more of a wooded walk from the parking lot. While it’s beautiful, be sure to pair it with another trail close by for a longer hike.

Good to know:

• Short ‘hike’ from parking (almost too short)
• Works well for toddlers and younger kids
• Busy during peak seasons
• Town of Breckenridge suggests taking the free town bus to the parking lot

Sledding at Carter Park (Free)

Carter Park is Breckenridge’s most popular little sledding hill, right next to Breckenridge Elementary. The space is open to anyone and free, but you must bring your own sled. There’s a chance you get lucky and there are extras there, but typically you’ll want to bring your own sled.

There’s parking close by, but it will fill up on occasion or on a busy day. Also, bathrooms are accessible from the park.

• Bring your own sled (sometimes there are some left behind)
• Parking can be limited during busy times
• Bathrooms on site

Ride the Breckenridge Gondola (Free)

The gondola is another big hit for kids and adults of all ages. With beautiful views of Breckenridge and a chance to look for wildlife like moose, bears, or foxes.

Keystone also had a Gondola to ride up, but does require you to purchase a Scenic Gondola Pass ($77 per person / $50 per child) or have a Vail Season Pass.

• Breckenridge gondola is free to ride
• Enclosed cabins (perfect activity for cold or windy days)
• Takes you to the base of Peak 7 & 8

Ride the Breckenridge Trolley (Free)

Riding around the Breckenridge Trolley is perfect for the littles who love trains, trucks, buses, etc. Breckenridge has a great free transportation system all over town, but it is also a great way to keep the kids entertained.

You can hop on and off throughout town, making it a good way to explore Breckenridge without needing to walk long distances.

Stroll on Main Street

Breckenridge Main Street is super cute and walkable. This alone is a fun activity to pop in and out of stores or find a sweet treat.

Best places on Main Street for kids

• Downstairs at Erics (arcade and pizza)
• Peek-a-Boo Toy Store
• Mountain Top Cookie Shop
• Crepe Cart

Good to know:

• Flat and stroller-friendly (but can be snowy/icy)
• Easy to pair with food or hot chocolate stops
• Can get crowded during weekends and holidays
• Taking the free bus into town is probably the easiest so you don’t have to look for parking

Open spaces & hiking

If you want to get outdoors with your kiddos, there are so many beautiful places to hike and explore!

• Trollstigen Trail & Illinois Creek Trail – Short, wooded trails near the ice rink and troll area. Easy walking and good for younger kids.
• Sapphire Point Trail – A shorter .6 mile loop with beautiful views overlooking Lake Dillon. Very popular so take the bus when possible to avoid parking issues.
• Burro Trail – Starts right off Main Street near the base of Peak 9 and follows the river. You can turn around at any point, making it easier to adjust with kids.
• Sawmill Reservoir – A mellow one-mile trail through the woods with a small reservoir and mountain views. A good option for a relaxed walk with breaks.

Winter activities for kids in Breckenridge

Snow tubing in Frisco Adventure Park or Copper Mountain Tubing Hill

This is honestly equally fun and thrilling for both the kids and adults.

Winter sleigh ride through the snow

A classic winter experience with hot coco through a winter wonderland. Many rides include warm blankets and shorter loop options.

• Golden Horseshoe

Go ice skating outside on Keystone Lake

Outdoor skating on a frozen lake with mountain views is such a fun experience! It feels pretty authentic at Keystone Lake. Rentals are available on site and fun for all ages.

Visit the ice castles in Silverthorne

The ice castles are back as of 2026 in Silverthorne! This is a great activity to do with the kiddos. It’s a super popular thing to do, so make sure to book ahead of time. There are ice tunnels, slides, and lit-up sculptures.

Dog Sledding

If the older kids are looking for something to do, this is such a unique experience!

Extreme Sledding at Country Boy Mine

If the older kiddos want a more thrilling sledding experience, this is a little more excitement than a traditional sled hill.

Fun summer activities in Breckenridge

Country Boy Mine gold panning

A fun and interactive experience that’s fun for kids and adults with a little history lesson! Country boy mine has both a gold panning experience as well as a tour of the mine.

Breckenridge Resort Fun Park

A fun spot for kids in the summer if you’re looking for activities! It can be a little pricier, but there is an alpine slide, mountain coaster, small put put and other activities designed for kids and families. Easy to spend a few hours here.

Indoor activities with kids in Breckenridge

Ready Paint Fire

A fun spot for kids and adults of all ages to paint your own pottery! Perfect for rainy or cold days where you just want to be inside.

They offer drop in times to work on your own project, or classes. Bonus: they also serve drinks for adults.

Children’s Museum – Mountain Top

A small children’s museum at the base of Peak 9 with indoor play areas for the younger kids.

The Playgarten in Silverthorne

The Playgarden is a new addition in Silverthorne and perfect if you’re looking for an indoor play space for kids. If you have a younger kiddo, who needs to run, climb and run around.

It’s attached to Bluebird Market, an indoor food hall, so it’s perfect and easy spot to play and eat with kids.

Bowling in Dillon

A classic family activity if you’re looking for something to do indoors. The bowling alley in Dillon is your classic bowling alley with food and drinks for both kids and adults.

Rec Center in Breckenridge

The Rec Center in Breckenridge is great for kids or family activities! There is a rock climbing wall, a pool with a slide and other kid play areas.

Ice skating at Stephen C. West Ice Arena

The ice rink in Breckenridge is an indoor ice rink available year round! They offer ice skating during different times as well as themed nights on occasion.

The Breckenridge library is great for the younger kiddos! They offer reading times and other activities.
