Tips for what to wear to your photoshoot

It’s hard to know what to dress your crew up in for family photos, but here are a few tips to keep you looking great, comfortable, and cozy!
What to wear for winter photoshoots

What to wear for fall photos
Coordinate your colors
Start by choosing 2/3 colors that you can mix and match between your group. Instead of everyone wearing the same color top and bottom, alternate and create a more ‘organic’ look by spacing the colors out.
Tips for any season
Consider using a company like StitchFix to put together an outfit for you. You can make a special request to have the whole family outfitted. Let them know what you like, what kind of setting you’ll be in and they’ll send you a custom box. Try other rental boxes like Nuuly or a local boutique to piece together the perfect outfit.
Consider what’s already in your closet! Do you have a favorite outfit that you feel great in? Does your partner have a favorite outfit?
Watch out for clothes that show wrinkles easily, collect lint, or anything else that may stand out in photos. Don’t wear something that only looks good when you stand still. We will be moving around a lot!
What to wear for winter photoshoot ❄️
Since we’re in an area that gets 9 months of winter, we’ll start here first! Are you taking pictures in the snow or having a winter photoshoot?
Keep warm! Wear layers
First things first, let’s start with what’s most important. Stay warm! Layers look so cute and even better, so warm! A mix of cute jackets, scarves, vests or even blankets. Warm socks and warm shoes will be a lifesaver. Bonus points if they can handle snow and have traction. Hats, mittens, or whatever cozy knit you have!
Don’t forget your base layer to stay warm! Long underwear under dresses and pants as long as it doesn’t look too bulky. Temperatures are usually below freezing in the mountains of Colorado in the winter. Don’t skimp. Still bring your big jacket to keep warm! We’ll usually take it off before photos if it isn’t something you want to incorporate. You’ll want it for when we’re walking around.
Bring hand and foot warmers to keep your fingers warm! That’s usually what gets the coldest during photos. Such a luxury to have on hand. Put these in your boots during your photos or in your jacket pockets to stay toasty.
Choose a color palette for your outfit
Pops of color against the bright snow can be so beautiful! Don’t be afraid to play with navy, burgundy, dark green, or some of the other deeper jewel tones. Keeping it traditional with neutrals like cream and white is a classic look that always looks incredible!
Bring a warm drink to warm you up
Incorporate it into your photos for a more natural feel WHILE staying warm. Win-win. I guess this isn’t really an outfit tip, but props can look so cute in your photos. Also will make the kids happy and produce the cutest photos. Sledding and hot chocolate would be a fun ‘theme.’
What to wear for a summer photoshoot
A lot of the above will still apply to summer photo sessions! In the mountains, it typically stays in the 70’s/maybe 80’s. Once the sun goes behind the mountain, it gets pretty chilly pretty quickly. You’ll want to make sure you have a few layers or a lite jacket. The evenings are usually in the 50’s so come prepared with whatever you need!
What to wear for fall photos
So many options with fall! A great time to keep it classic with neutrals and let the color speak for themselves. Or add in the fall hues of color like deep reds, mustards, and burnt orange.
Adding in cozy sweaters, flannels, beanies or boots
Hi! I'm Kelsey!
My photography journey started in 2009 when I fell in love with documenting moments and capturing people in their element.
11 years ago, I moved to the amazing little mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Wild to say I've photographed over 300 weddings and portrait sessions all over. I started this small but mighty team of local mountain photographers to capture whatever season of life you're in.
