The weather in the mountains of Colorado, especially Breckenridge, is so different than most places and can be unpredictable. Whether you’re planning for a vacation or choosing a wedding date, understanding the weather and different seasons can make a big difference.
Breckenridge doesn’t follow a traditional four-season calendar. Snow can arrive as early as September, though it doesn’t stick until late October or November. Winter conditions typically last until April, with snowstorms possible in May. True summer doesn’t fully start until mid to late June.

Winter in Breckenridge (December-April)
Winter starts a bit earlier in the high country than in most places! Winter starts around Thanksgiving as the ski resorts start opening and the snow starts building up. By Christmas, winter is usually in full swing, and the town really comes to life.
What to know before visiting in winter:
There are more crowds during holidays and weekends
Lodging and activities will usually book up early
Roads are usually well-plowed, but winter driving experience helps, and good winter tires are recommended
Temperatures are cold and typically will stay cold throughout the day
Best winter months:
March – for longer days and slightly warmer temperatures. More crowds with spring break
January & February – for consistent snow and fewer holiday crowds
December – for fun and lively Christmas festivities like the lighting of Breckenridge, the Race of the Santas

“Mud Season” April/May
Breckenridge doesn’t get much of a spring. Instead, we have mud season or shoulder season.
As the snow melts, trails can be muddy, some businesses close temporarily for seasonal cleanings, and skiing winds down. It’s also a nice, quiet time around town.
What to know:
Some businesses close for seasonal closures
Some trails/activities may be inaccessible
Fewer crowds, so bars may not be as lively
A mix of weather conditions! Anything from sunny, snowy, or rainy weather
Fall in Breckenridge (September–Early October)
Fall is short but beautiful.
The weather starts turning cool and crisp. The weather is perfect for leaf peeping and fall activities.
What to know:
Fall is brief, and peak colors often last only a few weeks
Snow can arrive as early as September
Some activities begin closing by mid‑October
Popular fall activities can be busier.
“Mud Season” (October-November)
Once the snow starts to pick back up, the trails can be muddy, and some businesses will close as we wait for the ski resorts to open back up.
Tips for Planning Your Trip
Layer Up: Weather can change quickly, so pack layers for all the conditions. You’ll want layers for any season!
Seasonal Closures: Some restaurants and shops may close during mud seasons for cleaning and renovations. If you have something on your bucket list, be sure to check the availability.
When to visit: Plan for larger crowds during major events and holidays. When possible, book ahead of time and make reservations.
Local weather: Be sure to check the local weather forecasts for your specific date. Also, trail conditions regularly. Check trail conditions too if you plan on hiking or exploring.
This is a trip of a lifetime, and Breckenridge is such a special place! Being prepared will help you stay comfortable, cozy, and ready for any element or adventure that Colorado can bring.
My photography journey started in 2009 when I fell in love with documenting moments and capturing people in their element.
12 years ago, I moved to the amazing little mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado, from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Wild to say I've photographed over 300 weddings and portrait sessions all over. I started this small but mighty team of local mountain photographers to capture whatever season of life you're in.
