If you’re looking for a low-key location for your small wedding or elopement ceremony around the Breckenridge area, Sapphire Point is stunning! The overlook sits at the top of Lake Dillon with gorgeous mountain, forest, and lake views.
As a local photographer in Dillon, Sapphire Point is such a special place where I’ve been able to photograph so many elopements, proposals, and couples. It’s also one of our favorite spots to bring visitors. It’s easy to get to, has beautiful views, and is a Breckenridge staple.
Sapphire Point is one of the most accessible hiking trails in Summit County, with lots of beautiful spaces for photos. A permit is needed to reserve the overlook space.
2026 Update (new overlook + construction)
The new ‘ Sapphire Point North Overlook’ will be the new ceremony space used for all weddings starting June 14, 2026. The Old West Overlook in these images will no longer be used for reservations or events.
Site construction is planned for mid-May through mid-June 2026. If you need an alternative to Sapphire Point, I put together a guide of Summit County wedding venues.
Sapphire Point wedding & elopement details

Guest limit: Up to 30 people total (including vendors and children)
Reservation window: 3-hour time slots
Permit cost: Approximately $120–$150
Parking: Limited to 2 vehicles

Availability & reservations at Sapphire Point
Weddings are year-round at Sapphire Point, making it one of the most popular spots for a small wedding or elopement in Breckenridge. They allow reservations 6 months in advance on their website. Book Sapphire Point Overlook.
Reservations are booked in 3-hour increments to use the Overlook area. Note that your reservation allows you to use the Overlook space, but does not block off the ‘Sapphire Point trail’, making it not 100% private, and allows for bystanders to pass by. Some will leave signage saying ‘quiet, wedding in place’ or something along those lines.
Guest count & setup
You can host weddings up to 30 people (including vendors + kids) at Sapphire Point. 30 people might be a bit of a stretch for the overlook area, so keeping it closer to 20 people will help! The new ceremony space looks a little more spacious and not as crowded.
Because of new rules starting in 2025, you can no longer have chairs.
Winter elopements at Sapphire Point
Winter elopements are very popular at Sapphire Point if you’re looking for an outdoor backdrop for your elopement or small wedding!
The path to the ceremony space can be a little icy, so be sure to wear slip-resistant shoes.
Keep in mind that during the winter, the sun sets early, so you’ll likely want to wrap up your photos before 4:30.
If you want to make your day super unique, consider adding an activity to your day or weekend, like dog sledding.
What to know about winter ceremonies:
Snow and ice can make the path slick
Warm, winter boots are best
Temperatures could be pretty frigid, so dress warm with plenty of layers

Summers in Breckenridge are pretty close to amazing, with perfect weather and great temperatures. Plan for the weather to change often, so prepare with layers.
It’s pretty sunny at the ceremony space, so don’t forget sunscreen.
There are so many fun things to do around Breckenridge in the summer to celebrate your new chapter! Be sure to add activities into your day and trip that are unique to you, like a boat ride, a hike, or a picnic on the lake.

Where should we stay near Sapphire Point?
Sapphire Point is just outside of the Town of Breckenridge and a quick 10-15 minute drive. It’s up a windy, steep road (Swan Mountain), so be sure to have a suitable 4-wheel drive car with winter tires in the winter to make it up the hill!
Breckenridge is the most popular and lively down, but Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon, or Keystone would also make great towns to stay in. They are about 5-25 minutes from Sapphire Point.

My photography journey started in 2009 when I fell in love with documenting moments and capturing people in their element.
12 years ago, I moved to the amazing little mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado, from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Wild to say I've photographed over 300 weddings and portrait sessions all over. I started this small but mighty team of local mountain photographers to capture whatever season of life you're in.
