Breckenridge, Colorado makes for an amazing backdrop to pop the question! We’re lucky enough to live in the mountains and have become experts at photographing proposals and would love to share a few locations and tips!
Best places to propose in the mountains of Breckenridge, Colorado!
1. Downtown Breckenridge – Year-round
Are you in love and you don’t care who knows? Proposing in Downtown Breckenridge at the Blue River Plaza would be a great spot! There will likely be people all around (and likely in the background of your photos), just note if that’s something you and you’re partner will be okay with! During the holidays, it’s a true winter wonderland. The trees are lit, snow should be in full swing and lots of fun things are going on around town!
If you want a little more privacy while downtown, walk along the bike path and other little trails and bridges around the Blue River. It goes right through downtown and would make for a beautiful setting! There are also a few garden areas and benches.
2. Sleigh ride – Winter
Does a private sleigh ride through the snowy trees sound like the perfect spot to pop the question? One of my favorite places and most unique activities is a sleigh ride at Golden Horseshoe! This is an awesome, local small company. There are a few other sleigh rides like on the mountain through Breckenridge Resort, Frisco, and Keystone. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, try dog sledding at Good Times, which is right next door to Golden Horseshoe! Another awesome local company.
3. Snowshoeing at The Breckenridge Nordic Center (Winter)
A private leisurely snowshoe tour at The Breckenridge Nordic Center takes you through the snowy trees and gorgeous views of the resort and gondola. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, try cross-country skiing! A pass is required to access The Nordic Center trails. They have cozy huts to warm up in, lots of history, and warm cocktails to celebrate with when you make it back to the lodge!
4. The Lodge at Breckenridge – Year-round
Rent the deck at The Lodge at Breckenridge for a private spot with one of the best views of Breckenridge Resort. A great year-round option. Lots of room for your friends and family if you want to include them! Probably the most expensive option on the list, but great if you want to have any decor set up. There’s a restaurant on-site and some of the best views in Breckenridge.
5. Propose in nature – Year-round
There are so many gorgeous trails and spaces around Breckenridge and Summit County. Perfect for those who love the outdoors or just want to roam around in nature. Check out Alltrails.com for the distance you want to hike, the location, and read the reviews to get a good idea! Lake Dillon is a stunning background and is relatively easy to access! Check out Blue Lakes or Loveland Pass for other incredible views!
6. Sapphire Point Overlook – Year-round
Probably the most popular spot to pop the question! If you’re okay with people nearby, Sapphire Point is a gorgeous option! You do have to reserve The Overlook area, which you can do online 6 months in advance!
7. Ice skating at Keystone Pond
In the winter once the pond freezes, they have ice skating and offer rentals on Keystone Pond. Such a memorable experience! Go ice skating under the stars or a sunny day! Check out this blog post for other locations in Keystone to propose.
Tips for your proposing in Colorado
Think about your ‘vision’ and your game plan! Is there a location you think your partner would like the most? Will they care what they’re wearing? Think about the most realistic way for them to be surprised.
Do you want to include friends or family? We’ve done ‘family sessions’ that turned into a proposal. Another great way to have others involved is have your partner leave with their group while you set the scene and get ready for the surprise. Do you want to do the proposal just the two of you and then have them jump out and surprise?
Think about crowds, accessibility, and weather, and consider what would be the best options for you both.
Would your partner want this moment photographed or caught on video? Do you want to include any signage or decorations? Note that by adding decorations, you may need a permit to use the space. Renting out a specific space allows (depending on the rules) you to decorate as you wish. Or consider having friends or family hold up a sign.
Where to celebrate in the mountains after your proposal?

Fall proposal in Breckenridge
Hi! I'm Kelsey!
My photography journey started in 2009 when I fell in love with documenting moments and capturing people in their element.
11 years ago, I moved to the amazing little mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Wild to say I've photographed over 300 weddings and portrait sessions all over. I started this small but mighty team of local mountain photographers to capture whatever season of life you're in.
